Departure Date: 14 April 2010

Turkey is the country where east meets west; Europe meets Asia. Its most famous city is situated across the Asian/European boundaries.
This tour will take you to places with exotic names and rich histories, Istanbul, Ankara, Troy, the Anzac beaches at Gallipoli and the fabulous Cappadocia region with its cave cities and incredible rocky skyline.
The Turks are very friendly and hospitable people with a rich culture and fascinating cuisine. You will be made welcome everywhere and will return with a deeper knowledge the history of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations.
This trip will be best enjoyed by participants possessing previous continental driving experience, who are reasonably mobile and have a sense for adventure.
All campsites chosen are the best in the areas being visited, however UK caravan club standards should not be expected. Electricity will be available at all sites; however the available amperage will be low. While this will be sufficient to power fridges and keep leisure batteries topped up, customers should be prepared to use gas for cooking, hot water, heating etc.
Our tour directors speak Turkish (one of them is Turkish), which could prove useful in the more remote regions.

Itinerary

Day Description
1 Wednesday 14th April 2010: We catch a lunchtime ferry , with access to the Club Class lounge with free Champagne and coffee. After disembarkation at Calais we have a leisurely drive of about 100 miles to arrive at our campsite in Tournai, Belgium. This evening the group will have the opportunity to get to know each other at an informal drinks reception.
2 Thursday 15th April 2010: A longer drive today, about 270 miles, but nearly all on motorway, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. Our destination is a campsite in a village at the most northerly point of the Black Forest in Germany. The campsite has its own restaurant and we will be treated to a grill dinner this evening.
3 Friday 16th April 2010: We continue south and our next stop will be a campsite in Switzerland. The total drive will be about 210 miles, but virtually all on motorway.
4 Saturday 17th April 2010: Today’s drive to Bologna is about 280 miles and will include driving around Milan’s notorious ring-road.
5 Sunday 18th April 2010: A day to rest and put your feet up – you’ve earned it!
6 Monday 19th April 2010: We catch the ferry from Ancona this evening. We will be sleeping on deck in our motorhomes, with 220 volt hook-ups. Most people will not have experienced this before, so it will be an opportunity for a new experience. If you decide to upgrade to a cabin, they may seem expensive, but they are of a very high standard. The boat has a variety of restaurants and this evening we will all get together for a group dinner in their a la carte restaurant.
7 Tuesday 20th April 2010: We arrive at Igoumenitsa early this morning and after disembarkation we have a drive of about 240 miles to arrive at a campsite at Methoni Pierias in Greece.
8 Wednesday 21st April 2010: After a drive of about 230 miles we will arrive at our next campsite at Alexandroupoli, still in Greece
9 Thursday 22nd April 2010: We have had a few hard days of driving, so today we will do absolutely nothing but relax.
10 Friday 23rd April 2010: After a short drive of 25miles we will reach the Turkish border. After crossing the border we have a short drive of only about 90 miles to our first Turkish campsite at Eceabat, Gallipoli.

12 Sunday 25th April 2010: Today as we leave Eceabat we cross the Marmara sea and set foot in Asia for the first time. Our drive is 95 miles to Oren, stopping off on the way to visit the ancient site of Troy. Oren is a typical small Turkish holiday resort where our campsite is located right on the beach.
13 Monday 26th April 2010: A free day to relax on the beach or visit the Turkish town of Burhaniye, 3 miles from the campsite. One can walk, cycle or catch the dolmus (a small local bus).

This will be followed by a visit to the house claimed to be where the Virgin Mary sought refuge and remained until her death. Lunch is included.
17 Friday 30th April 2010: Another group excursion today, this time to Pamukkale; a “cotton” castle formed from white calcium pools. Lunch is included.
18 Saturday 1st May 2010: Today has been left completely free to catch up on the chores.
